Before & After: Upgrading to a Larger Hot Water Cylinder

There’s nothing more frustrating than running out of hot water, especially in a busy household.

This customer contacted A1 Services Oxford Ltd because their existing hot water cylinder was simply too small to meet their family’s daily hot water demand. Rather than constantly running out of hot water, they chose to upgrade to a larger, higher-capacity cylinder that would provide plenty of hot water when they needed it most.

We removed the old cylinder from the loft and installed a brand-new, larger-capacity insulated hot water cylinder, complete with new safety controls, valves and insulated pipework.

The benefits of the upgrade include:

✅ Significantly more hot water storage for the whole household.

✅ Longer showers without running out of hot water.

✅ Improved energy efficiency with a modern, well-insulated cylinder.

✅ Greater reliability and peace of mind.

✅ A professional installation completed to current industry standards.

The before and after photos show the transformation, with the new cylinder providing a much larger hot water reserve while fitting neatly within the existing loft space.

If your family is regularly running out of hot water, your cylinder may simply be too small for your home’s needs. Upgrading to a larger cylinder can make a huge difference to your comfort without the inconvenience of constantly waiting for water to reheat.

A Homeowner’s Guide from A1 Services Oxford Ltd

Your boiler is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home, providing heating and hot water every day. While regular servicing can keep it running efficiently, every boiler will eventually reach the end of its lifespan. Knowing the warning signs can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns and expensive emergency repairs.

At A1 Services Oxford Ltd, we help homeowners across Didcot, Abingdon, Wallingford, Wantage and Oxfordshire decide whether it’s more cost-effective to repair or replace their boiler. Here are ten signs it may be time for an upgrade.

1. Your Boiler Is More Than 12–15 Years Old

Most modern gas boilers have a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years when serviced annually. As boilers age, they become less efficient, replacement parts become harder to source, and breakdowns become more frequent.

If your boiler is approaching this age, it’s worth considering a replacement before it fails completely—especially if you rely on it throughout the winter.

2. Frequent Breakdowns

Has your boiler needed multiple repairs over the past year?

Occasional repairs are normal, but if you’re regularly calling an engineer, the repair costs can quickly add up. Investing in a new, reliable boiler may be more economical than continually fixing an ageing system.

A good rule of thumb is:

One repair every few years – usually worthwhile.

Several repairs in 12 months – consider replacing.

3. Rising Energy Bills

Older boilers often operate at much lower efficiencies than today’s A-rated condensing boilers.

If your gas usage has increased despite using your heating in the same way, your boiler could be wasting energy. A new high-efficiency boiler, combined with modern heating controls, can help reduce energy consumption and improve comfort throughout your home.

4. Strange Noises

A healthy boiler should operate relatively quietly.

If you hear:

Banging

Knocking

Gurgling

Whistling

Vibrating

it could indicate limescale, trapped air, pump problems or internal wear. While some issues can be repaired, persistent noises in an older boiler may suggest it’s nearing the end of its service life.

5. Your Boiler Is Losing Pressure

If you’re constantly topping up the pressure, there could be:

A leak in the heating system

A faulty pressure relief valve

A failing expansion vessel

Internal boiler faults

Although these problems are often repairable, recurring pressure loss can become expensive on older appliances.

6. Replacement Parts Are Difficult to Find

Manufacturers eventually stop producing parts for older boiler models.

When components become obsolete, repairs take longer and may not even be possible. In many cases, replacing the boiler becomes the only practical solution.

7. Your Home Isn’t Heating Properly

If you notice:

Cold radiators

Uneven heating

Poor hot water performance

Long waiting times for hot water

your boiler may no longer be capable of meeting your household’s heating demands.

While these symptoms can also be caused by sludge, faulty valves or circulation problems, an ageing boiler should be assessed as part of the diagnosis.

8. Yellow or Orange Flame

Your boiler flame should normally burn bright blue.

A yellow or orange flame could indicate incomplete combustion and should always be investigated by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Never ignore this warning sign, particularly if it’s accompanied by soot or unusual smells.

If you suspect a gas leak or carbon monoxide risk, turn off the appliance (if safe to do so), ventilate the property and seek professional assistance immediately.

9. Leaks Around the Boiler

Water leaks may seem minor initially but can lead to corrosion and damage to internal components.

Common causes include:

Worn seals

Corroded pipework

Faulty pumps

Pressure issues

Heat exchanger failure

If the heat exchanger has failed on an older boiler, replacement is often the more cost-effective long-term solution.

10. Your Boiler No Longer Meets Your Needs

Perhaps you’ve:

Extended your home.

Added another bathroom.

Increased your family’s hot water usage.

Installed underfloor heating.

Your existing boiler may simply be undersized. Upgrading to a correctly specified boiler can improve performance, efficiency and comfort throughout your property.

Repair or Replace?

Many homeowners ask whether they should repair their existing boiler or invest in a replacement.

A repair is often the best option if:

The boiler is less than 10 years old.

The fault is relatively minor.

Spare parts are readily available.

The appliance has been serviced annually.

Replacement may be the better choice if:

The boiler is over 12–15 years old.

Repairs are becoming increasingly frequent.

Energy bills are rising.

Parts are obsolete.

You want improved efficiency and a longer manufacturer’s warranty.

The Benefits of a New Boiler

Installing a modern boiler offers several advantages:

Lower energy bills through improved efficiency.

More reliable heating and hot water.

Quieter operation.

Better compatibility with smart thermostats such as Hive and Nest.

Reduced carbon emissions.

Manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years on selected models.

SERVICE YOUR HEATING SYSTEM / POWER FLUSHING

Heating on but the house still FREEZING?

A BOILER that takes hours to warm up could mean you need to get it serviced. The problem is often caused by a build up of dirty water and sludge, which causes a blockage in the heating system.

An inefficient boiler is a sign you need to get a plumber to do a service, or even replace your model.

This is because it points to a blockage in the system, caused by dirty water or sludge.

If your boiler makes strange clunking noises, it is another sign your boiler urgently needs repair.

If your boiler takes forever to heat up, or else it never gets properly warm, it could point to a blockage in the system.

Over time, central heating systems may get blockages in the pipes, for instance from dirty water or sludge.

Sometimes, a radiator fails to get warm because of an airlock in the central heating system, or else a fault with the thermostatic radiator valve.

However, another common cause is a partial blockage in the system which affects it.

Signs of a blockage include some radiators failing to heat up at all, or radiators which have a warm top and a cold bottom.

Another sign you need a boiler service or even a new boiler to be installed includes strange sounds.

If your boiler is making a loud banging sound regularly (and not just when you turn up the thermostat) this spells trouble.

It could mean any number of boiler issues, from a broken valve to heat pump problems.

The first step to take is to turn off the boiler if you hear these strange sounds.

Then, call out an engineer to fix your boiler or advise on whether it needs a replacement.

Maintain your boiler with an annual boiler service

A lot of people skip their annual boiler service, but it’s so important! A healthy boiler makes for a healthy home, and servicing it will extend the life of your boiler for perhaps years. You’ll save money in the long run, and avoid the headache of boiler breakdowns and problems.Bleed your radiators

Bleed your radiators

No matter how perfectly sealed your central heating system is, over time air will get inside and start making a nuisance of itself. This might result in cold areas of your radiator (usually the top). If you have, then it is time to bleed your radiator.

Test your central heating before it gets too cold

One of the best tips to make sure your boiler is ready for winter is to test it before the weather gets too cold. So, around October or early November, just as it’s starting to chill, you should test your heating. Better to do that than wait until the weather is too cold to find out your heating’s kaput.

Keep your heating on low.

If the temperature drops suddenly there Is a chance this can freeze your boilers external condensate pipe which can cause your boiler to stop working. Insulating the condensate can help avoid this. We also advise to keep the heating on low during the cold spell.

If you do find yourself with a frozen condensate pipe, we recommend pouring tepid water over the pipework. This should unfreeze the pipe. Be careful when doing this as you don’t pour the water onto a path/walk way as this will freeze and become a hazard.

Bleed your radiators.

If you are turning up your heating and thinking your property isn’t heating as well as you think it should, it could be possible you have an air lock in your system. Releasing the air from the system is easy, all you need is a radiator key which will slot into the radiator bleed valve. If you are still facing problems after completing this give a Gas safe registered engineer a call.

Keep your boiler maintained.

Here at A1 we highly advise you have your boiler serviced annually, therefore any possible issues will be picked up and resolved before you are possibly left with no heating in a cold spell. We also recommend checking regularly for any leaks, cracks or noises.

A1 Services do have availability to attend your boiler should you feel you require a Gas Safe Registered engineer to attend your boiler. Please do call us on 01235 812999.

Like so much of the country, we’re snowed under right now!

Because of the weather conditions we are receiving a huge volume of calls and our engineers are in high demand. And like so many other people on the road, our engineers are struggling to get to some parts of Oxfordshire.

We are trying to provide you with the same service as usual, but we are prioritising people who have no heating and hot water. We have also implemented additional measures to try and help.

If your boiler has shut down and is showing error code, then your condensate pipe may be frozen.

Please follow these steps to get your boiler up and running again:

Switch your boiler off at the control panel, and turn off the electricity at the wall.

Find where the pipe is frozen, usually the most exposed part of the pipe.

Warm the condensate pipe across its exposed length using either a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack or warm water poured from a watering can. Do not use boiling water straight from the kettle as this could damage the pipe.

Turn the power back on at the wall and restart your boiler. Repeat the process until the boiler works again.
